Instagram reaches 12 Million Users

iOS Photo Application Instagram has hit 12 million users globally and the app is very much a mobile social network for sharing photos (either by just Instagram itself, or by sharing through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, and Foursquare).

Co-founder Kevin Systrom has released some interesting stats about Instagram:

- 25,000 downloads on day 1
- 1 download per second globally
- Japan is second largest market
- USA largest market
- China having 100,000 downloads per week

Many Android users have been waiting for their own version of the Instagram application, which is said to be in the build.

All of this is great work by the team at Instragram who currently only have a staff team of 6. Kevin Systrom said an advertising network will be incorporated at some point in the future.

Instragram is built on the Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure in the United States often utilising around 100 machines at any given time.
