Instagram Users in Australia – recalculation

Instagram recently told us they now have 200,000,000 monthly users. If we use the Facebook formulae of approx 1.03% being the Australian audience (13.4 million monthly Australian users/ 1.3 Billion monthly users) – we have approx 2,060,000 monthly Australian Instagram users.

Twitter Users in Australia – recalculation

Twitter Australia has told us the don’t track user numbers by region/ country. I’m sure that they do, however they just don’t want to release figures. So we will go with the Facebook formulae to help give our estimation.

In their recent earnings call, Twitter told investors they now have 271 million monthly active users worldwide (60 million in the US).

If we take 1.03% of this 271 million monthly active users, we get 2,791,300 Australian Twitter Users.

Key Points To Note:

  • Instagram now has over 2 million monthly Australian users.
  • Twitter has over 2.7 million monthly Australian users.
  • The main Social Networks like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have a cemented user base but still have a little monthly movement. New users are still signing up to these sites, but their growth rates are slow. At the same time, users are leaving these sites.
  • According to Facebook’s ad tool, the number of Australian users has grown by 200,000 over the past 2-3 months.
  • It’s worth nothing that YouTube is still gaining users. From our research we have found YouTube still attracts a unique audience that don’t use traditional social media – for example mature aged people looking at videos online whom don’t use Facebook, Twitter etc.
  • Foursquare has moved all users who want to check-in to their Swarm app. Many people have signed up to the new app, but many loyal Foursquare users have also expressed their disappointment with the new setup, and that they can no longer check-in on Foursquare. I suspect in coming months this may cause users to drop off.
  • LinkedIn has seen a noticeable increase this month with new and existing Australian users returning to the site.
  • My estimation is that Tinder has around 1 million Australian users who have signed up to the service (not monthly active users).
