Social Media Statistics Australia – October 2015
Well – what a shame the Wallabies didn’t win the Rugby World Cup this morning. Well done to New Zealand for their great win and I hope you all had a Happy Halloween!
As today is the first of the month we report our latest social media statistics, showing the most popular social networks in Australia over the October 2015 period.
Over 2015 we have seen general stagnation with social media user growth in Australia.
However with summer here and school holidays coming up, we typically see increased social media use from the younger demographics. Some of them even convince their parents and grandparents to signup to social media – thus continued growth is inevitable, especially for the largest network like Facebook. During this period we also see some business networking drop off.

1. Facebook – 14,000,000 users (steady)
2. YouTube – 13,900,000 UAVs

Key Points to Note
- Facebook has not seen a rise for a few months. On any given day they see a net positive increase in the number of Australian users however this is not immediately reflected in their advertising tool or marketing material. I expect to see a rise in Facebook users soon.
- Video consumption is very high in Australia and whilst a totally different experience – YouTube almost has the same number of users as Facebook.
- Tinder is very popular in Australia amongst the younger demographics. I have revised our estimate to 1,600,000 Australian users.
- Travel related networks like Yelp and TripAdvisor attract new users especially over the summer holiday months.
- I have had a few request to add the Periscope app by Twitter to my list. According to my data and assumptions, there are no more than 15,000 Periscope users in Australia.
