What is Social Media?

on September 15, 2011 | Social Media | Comments (0)

Over the next couple of days we are going to get back to some Social Media basics.

I often receive emails from people who are starting out in social media, and don’t want to be baffled by more advanced SM topics, they want generic definitions. Many users come to this site for basic information and I want to make sure I am catering for them – and also reminding the general community on ‘social media basics’.

So the question for today is:

What is Social Media?

In my opinion the best way to break down social media is look at the meaning for each word.

Social – interaction, community, group, public, sharing, being helpful to others.

Media – a tool to share information, news, personal details, photos, videos, thoughts, a communication tool.

So Social Media is a social/public tool or system that allows for the transmission of data and user communication.

This often means a website, mobile application or technology system that allows users to communicate and transmit data in a public, real time environment.
