Google+ V Facebook

Google has a huge market share in the search business and operate a monopoly in most of their markets around the world. Then funneling all income back to Google Ireland for tax purposes. Did you know Google Australia actually made a loss last financial year? Come on! Let’s all be fair and pay our taxes, I do, my businesses do. Ok so what they are doing may be legal, but it’s not really helping these local economies that Google is making so much money from. Especially developing countries that could really do with more business tax. Maybe I am thinking too ethical in this case, lets move on..
Then we have Google leaking your contact list when Google Buzz launched – which in my opinion is more of a privacy blunder than what Facebook did, and then we have the Wifi issue where it was collecting Wifi data from its Google Street cam cars around the world. But I need to be objective here, if Google collected by Wifi network data – would I really care?
Umm not really!
Google is obviously innovating at a great pace. They have launched so many products over the past couple years that we have all lost track. If they are unsuccessful they are shut down and no further resources get allocated to them, fair enough.
But the fundamental questions are:
- Will all people with a Google Account/ Gmail signup and use Google+ ?
- Will people leave Facebook and flock to Google+ ? or use both services?
- In a years’ time will we still hyped up about the new Google+ product?
No…. – it’s a big call, but I will eat my words if i have to.
Now all of this is my personal view, which we are all entitled to have. I use many Google products myself because they are innovative and they are the best products in their respective space.
When Google does open the Google+ doors to the public I would like to check it out (and see if they accept a RSS feed of my content), but I can’t leave Facebook and my non-tech savvy network to go to a new social network with a small percentage of my contacts. Obviously it is too early to tell how many people will go and signup to Google+ but it already looks like more a network for techies, which in itself would be useful for many businesses.
I believe there is more room in the social media space for new products. Many people have both a Facebook and Twitter account – both products offer different services and do not directly compete with each other. In fact Facebook and Twitter have integrated with each others platforms.
I am skeptical, I will admit it. And in the fun of it all, Hitler had his say about Google+
In all seriousness, this is a huge move by Google, and somewhat risky considering their past performances in the social media arena.
I welcome any comments you may have – Australia what do you think about the new Google+ social network?
Will you use it, either replacing or in addition to Facebook?
I welcome any views/ opinions.
