Facebook building Data Centre in North Pole
Facebook has decided they will be building a new data centre near the North Pole to increase performance of the site for European users.
Currently Facebook has server farms in California, Virginia, Oregon and building another data centre in North Carolina.
The site will specifically be at Lule, Sweeden which is not far from the North Pole at all. Temperatures in this area rarely get above 25 degrees Celsius in summer months. In winter months – freezing!
This new facility which will be 3 buildings about 28,000 square meters each powered by Hydro-electricity, and will be a data store for users in Europe which will significantly increase performance speeds of the site.
This new data centre is expected for completion in 2014 and costs are expected to be around $750 million USD.
