Facebook Updates Privacy Controls

on September 2, 2011 | Facebook | Comments (0)

Facebook has updated their privacy controls to make managing your personal data easier.

The area of the site I am talking about is this page: http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=privacy

One advantage Google Plus has was the ability to choose who you share a status update with – either your friends, a certain list of people or everyone.

Facebook has now rolled out similar functionality so you can be selective of who you want to share your details with.

Here is how the new privacy controls page looks:

Also when your friends share a status update – you can see explicitly who the status update was shared with by hovering on the ‘friend’ icon – eg:

This functionality is obviously filling a gap it had with Google Plus, after much hype about increased privacy.

Will users actually use this functionality? It probably doesn’t make much difference to Facebook, but it’s good to see they are moving quickly to any areas that need improvement.
