Google showing advertising inside Google Maps
Google has been testing for several months now sponsored based icons in Google Maps.
If zoomed in close enough, participating business are able to show their logo on the maps, which is charge by a Cost per Impression basis. The CPM amount is determined more so by business type than keyword. In fact keywords may not have any influence in this situation.
I conducted a search in Sydney CBD and whilst Google showed me all results – some sponsored results stood out with the company logo.
It doesn’t look like this feature has made available to anywhere else but Australia yet.
