Gowalla officially shut down

on March 12, 2012 | Gowalla | Comments (0)

Mobile geo-location app, Gowalla has now official shut down.

We reported sometime ago that Facebook purchased Gowalla - mainly as a talent purchase. Gowalla staff members and CEO Josh Williams have been busy working on the new Facebook Places API.

You can see the blog post from Facebook here, which goes on to explain that the API has been opened up to allow applications to share your location, who you are with and also better search for places inside Facebook.

Clearly the Gowalla team has been hard at work developing Facebook’s location products.

Gowalla have now put up the following message on their site:

From here this really leaves Foursquare to monopolise the location services arena as they have no direct competition.

In fact a large number of products are integrating directly into the Foursquare API to pull the location data into their own application – eg Instagram do this.
