NBN Co outsourcing heavily overseas
NBN Co is the government department responsible for rolling out Australia’s super fast National Broadband Network.
However it has been revealed many of the suppliers and contractors to this project are foreign owned and controlled companies, prompting the local technology and IT industry to criticise the government for not supporting local suppliers.
Swedish company Ericsson has scored a $1.1 Billion deal to rollout a wide scale wireless network.
French company Alcatel Lucent has secured a $1.5 Billion deal to supply of networking equipment.
However NBN Co says around 50% of construction and manufacturing contracts have been awarded to Australian firms. It’s worth keep an eye on this to see if Australian companies are getting enough NBN contracts.
