New Organ Donor Option on Facebook

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now urging users to share their organ donor status on Facebook.

Whilst many of us are organ donors and have this listed on our Drivers License, having the ability to declare our organ donor status on Facebook will certainly raise awareness of this important medical issue.

So far users in the USA and United Kingdom are getting the option to declare their status, with other countries to receive this feature over the coming months. Facebook is even going one step further to link you with the official organ donor registries in your local community.

This is obviously a nice thing Mark Zuckerberg is doing, but Facebook does need to be careful – especially in countries where religious views oppose organ donation. The last thing we would want to see is hate groups and backlash on Facebook against people who choose to or not to donate their organs.

Some medical professionals are even going as far as saying this could drastically reduce the waiting list of organ transplants.

Currently this feature is not available to Australian Facebook users but we will let you know when it rolls out.
