Reporter dismissed over Logies ‘jokes’ on Twitter

Catherine Deveny whom worked for The Age has been sacked amid controversial comments she made over Twitter recently.

Her comments stated she hoped 11 year-old Bindi Irwin “gets laid”, and that Rove McManus’s wife Tasma Walton “didn’t die too”.

“You’ve got to understand the context of social networking to understand it” she said, trying to imply there was humor behind her post. Maybe so, but unfortunately there was a strong negative reaction from her words – which isn’t surprising at all.

Deveny says her comments have been taken out of context and were meant to be funny. It seems to be clear that social media policy amongst high visibility organisations is to be taken very seriously.

Comedian Wil Anderson also drew criticism from tweets during the Logies aimed at Molly Meldrum, Rebecca Gibney, Dr Harry Cooper, Matt Preston in adult related contexts.
