Search for Facebook deals in Australia soon – facebook.com/deals
With the deal a day market becoming increasingly competitive over the past couple months, Google trying to buy GroupOn in the US, Yahoo Australia buying spreets.com.au for $40 million AUD – Facebook is now getting in on the action with their own deals service through their mobile check-in platform.
If you use a Facebook mobile device, iPhone, Android, or Windows 7 Phone application – when you go to check-in, Facebook will now show you any venues offering a ‘deal’ to Facebook users.
The site facebook.com/deals also lets you search for deals in your area, which is then displayed on the site and in a Bing Maps widget.
The service has only been operating for a little while in the US, and as of yet no deals for Australia – but we will be keeping a close eye on this product and when it becomes available for users in Australia. No doubt Sydney and Melbourne will be popular markets and with Facebook’s huge presence in Australia I am sure this will be a successful product.
The service seems to be very close to the mobile offering of Foursquare (which doesn’t have a big presence in Australia) – a clear goal for Facebook in 2011 is mobile, whereas on the other hand GroupOn (in the US) and Spreets in Australia are still focusing as a ‘website’ experience.
Facebook currently has over 200 million mobile users.
