Here is a cool infograph showing the difference between WordPress.org (your own self hosted WordPress setup) or WordPress.com (free hosted blog on WordPress.com subdomain).

WordPress has to be the most popular blogging software in the world. There is an estimated 150 million blogs worldwide and alot of these would be powered by WordPress.

Having a self hosted version of WordPress really opens up huge possibilities in web development, however using the free hosted WordPress.com version you are still able to make an attractive blog and not worry about costs or downtime.
