Australian Mobile Internet Usage, July 2010


Almost half of Australian mobile phone users have own an internet-enabled phone, however only a third go on the internet regularly.

Australian mobile internet phone ownership now sits at 43 per cent. 29 per cent regularly are using the internet to search, email, find maps and social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn etc.

The most popular activity on these phones are internet searches where around 73 per cent of users run search on their mobile, compared to just 30 per cent a year ago.

The other most popular uses include:

– checking news
– weather
– email
– maps and directions
– social networking

As more telcos are releasing mobile data caps plans this has lead to a clear increase in the number of people browsing the web on their mobile handsets.

Nokia remains in number 1 spot on internet phones with a 35% market share in Australia.

The iPhone is in number 2 spot at 28% market share. This figure was only 13% a year ago- big growth.

In terms of mobile social networking share, Facebook is the most popular social networking site accessed at 98%, Twitter in 2nd place at 20% and MySpace 3rd with 17%.

Telstra has apparently doubled its data traffic on the Next G™ network double every eight months for the past two years over the past 8 months.
