National Cyber-Security Awareness Week in Australia

It is National Cyber-Security Awareness Week in Australia, June 6-11 – 2010.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has asked Facebook to upgrade their user interface with a button where users can immediately report online crime to the police with a single click.

This initiative is run by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and they are promoting 6 keys steps to online safety:

1. Install security and anti-virus software and update it regularly.

2. Turn on automatic updates of your security and anti-virus software.

3. Create a stronger password and change it at least twice yearly.

4. Stop and think before you click on links or attachments.

5. Stop and think before you share any personal or financial information? Think about how this could affect yourself or your friends and family.

6. Know what your children are doing online. Make sure they know to stay safe and encourage them to report anything suspicious.
