Amazon Cloud environment down-time

on July 5, 2010 | Amazon | Comments (0)

Amazon.com has one of the most sophisticated cloud computing environments today (along with Microsoft).

This enables the company to scale their computing requirements and resources as and when they need. During holiday periods of high traffic they can easily boost the hardware required to keep their site operational and speedy.

Last Tuesday Amazon.com had a 3 hour outage where their cloud environment failed.

This resulted in a 7.8% loss in share price by the days closing.

Rough calculations come $51,400 lost per minute the site was down, or close to $10 million USD for the 3 hour period.

Whilst Amazon was using some of the most sophisticated internet technologies there can always be costly outages.
